Project Overview

Terra Firma Energy operates a 20MW flexible gas-powered generation plant on Miners Road in Wrexham, which was completed in late 2024 and became fully operational soon after in early 2025.

Terra Firma Energy entered into a long-term agreement with EDF to optimise its new 20MW flexible gas generation plant at Miners Road. This collaboration underscores Terra Firma Energy’s leadership in the flexible energy generation sector and its commitment to supporting the UK’s transition to a sustainable energy future.

The plant supports UK grid stability by providing rapid-response, backup electricity during peak demand, capable of powering roughly 47,000 homes.

Key Site Details

  • Operation: The 20.7MW capacity peaking plant provides essential backup power to the National Grid.
  • Performance: After over a year of operation (as of February 2026), the site successfully supported grid stability during high-demand periods.
  • Technology: The project uses Finning (Caterpillar) gas engines to deliver rapid power.
  • Partnerships: EDF (UK) manages the optimization of the plant, while funding was supported by Close Brothers Leasing.
  • Environmental Context: The project is designed to complement renewable energy sources by offering reliable, dispatchable power when needed.
