Project Overview

Terra Firma Energy operates a 20MW “gas-to-grid” reserve energy power plant on Burtonhead Road in St. Helens, Lancashire, designed to support grid stability. The plant became fully-operational in early 2023 and features fast-acting generators to meet peak demand, with maintenance support from YLEM Energy for its Cummins gensets.

Key Site Details

  • Location: Burtonhead Road, St. Helens.
  • Capacity: 20MW flexible generation.
  • Status: Fully operational as of early 2023, serving as a key flexible generation asset.
  • Purpose: Provides reserve power to the National Grid to manage demand peaks and support renewable energy intermittency.
  • Infrastructure: Uses gas-fired generators and includes acoustic fencing to reduce noise for the local community.

Development Context

  • Ownership: Developed by Terra Firma Energy, which creates, owns, and operates flexible power generation plants across the UK.
  • Partnerships: YLEM Energy was appointed for the operation and maintenance (O&M) of the site.
  • Related Projects: The site is part of a broader, expanding portfolio of flexible energy, including other sites in North Wales and England.

The St. Helens plant is a key part of the UK’s, and particularly the North West of England’s, transition to a more flexible energy system.
